6 Days 5 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route

The 6 Days 5 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route is designed for experienced and adventurous trekkers looking for a steep, direct, and scenic path to Africa’s highest peak. Known as the shortest and most challenging route up Kilimanjaro, Umbwe offers incredible solitude and dramatic landscapes that few others experience. If you are seeking a raw, less-traveled adventure with unbeatable views and personal triumph, this is your perfect climb.

The Umbwe Route starts on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro and ascends quickly through lush rainforest, steep ridges, and moorland before joining the Barranco Camp where it merges with the Machame Route. Unlike the gradual slopes of other trails, Umbwe is steep right from the beginning, making it ideal for fit and determined climbers with some trekking experience or those seeking a serious challenge.

Your 6 Days 5 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Umbwe Gate (1,800 m). From here, the trail dives into thick, green rainforest alive with colobus monkeys and tropical birds. The air is cool and damp, and as you climb higher, you’ll quickly leave behind the forest canopy for open ridges offering magnificent views of deep valleys below and the towering Uhuru Peak above.

By Day 2, you’ll trek along steep, rocky paths toward Barranco Camp (3,950 m). This section is short but physically demanding, and your reward is an awe-inspiring view of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and the southern ice fields. Here, you’ll camp under a vast starry sky, surrounded by the towering walls of the Barranco Valley.

From Barranco, the route continues across the iconic Barranco Wall, a thrilling scramble that looks daunting but is surprisingly manageable. After this section, the trail winds through alpine desert terrain to Karanga Camp (3,995 m) where climbers rest and refuel while acclimatizing for the summit push.

On Day 4, you’ll proceed to Barafu Camp (4,673 m), your final stop before the summit attempt. Temperatures drop significantly here, and the excitement builds as you prepare for the toughest yet most rewarding section — the midnight climb to the roof of Africa.

Your summit attempt begins in the early morning hours of Day 5, as you ascend slowly but steadily toward Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim. From here, the final hour’s walk to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — Africa’s highest point — is pure exhilaration. Watching the sunrise from the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable moment, with panoramic views stretching over the African plains and even glimpses of Mount Meru in the distance.

After celebrating your achievement at the top, you’ll descend via the Mweka Route, stopping overnight at Mweka Camp (3,100 m) before completing the trek at Mweka Gate the next day. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificate — a lasting reminder of your determination and endurance.
